Showground upgrade attracting more visitors

17 May 2023

Albury Showground has become a highly sought-after camping ground with NSW Government upgrades worth $1,081,000 including a new amenities block and electricity, water and sewerage connections for caravan and campervan sites.

Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said Albury Showground is now attracting more travellers who spend money in Albury’s shops and cafes, supporting local jobs and paying camping fees that go back into maintaining the showground.

“This $1.08 million upgrade has transformed the showground into a more desirable stopover for campers, giving the showground a much brighter future while helping boost regional tourism,” Mr Kamper said.

“The new facilities will also improve the experience for the many regular users of the showground, whether you’re attending martial arts training, cross country races or dog obedience training, or one of the fantastic annual events like the Albury Show.”

Albury Showground is a Crown Reserve and Crown Lands funded the works through the Crown Reserves improvement Fund.

Upgrades included new sewerage and drainage, water works including new fire hydrants and two amenities blocks within 90 metres of each campsite with 12 showers and 20 toilets with disabled facilities. The old amenities block was turned into a new laundry.

Chair of the board that manages Albury Showground Henk van de Ven said there had been a flood of bookings since the upgrade, with 70 caravans staying at powered sites over Easter as well as recreational vehicles staying at basic sites.

“Since word started getting out that it’s a nice place to stay the phone hasn’t stopped ringing, so we plan to introduce online bookings to relieve the volunteer board members who answer the phone,” Mr van de Ven said.

The $1.08 million upgrade follows other NSW Government investments of $74,421 over the past three years to reseal a number of internal roads and repair the Heywood Pavilion including fixing the floor, installing drainage and external painting.
