Maules Creek hall centenary gets a boost

The rural community of Maules Creek will be celebrating the centenary of its community hall in style following the completion of upgrades including a new amenities block.

The 100-year-old hall, which has served the community faithfully since 1922, will mark its centenary on 8 October with a community day planned by the Crown land manager.

The Maules Creek Recreation Reserve is a popular Crown land reserve well used by the local community.

The land manager has worked hard to give the hall a new lease of life with renovations including a new roof, insulation and evaporative air conditioning, upgrading of the supper room and kitchen, and exterior painting.

The NSW Government has contributed $157,290 from the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund to construct new amenities block with toilets, showers and disabled facilities for the reserve to support local residents and events.

Maules Creek Recreation Reserve Land Manager Secretary Brian Dampney said the hall and reserve are used for a range of community events providing an important venue for social interaction.

“The hall upgrades have been a massive improvement together with the new amenities block which will allow us to cater for events like the annual camp draft that can attract over a thousand people over its three days,” Mr Dampney said.

“The reserve also hosts the Country Women’s Association, twice yearly Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services at the War Memorial Park, dog trials, Fairfax Public School athletics carnivals, Christmas concerts, and Rural Fire Service.”

The hall’s centenary will be celebrated with an ‘old school weekend’ of events including sheaf tossing, vintage cars and tractors, history and memorabilia displays, children’s events like tug-of-war, and the inaugural ‘Maules Creek Gift’ foot race to find the fastest local in the region.
