Outback camping improved with Penrose Park upgrades

26 Oct 2023

Camping will be safer and more enjoyable at Penrose Park Recreation and Campground at Silverton after the NSW Government completed a major $2.5 million upgrade to infrastructure at the reserve.

The Crown Lands improvements to the reserve have included replacement of old amenities blocks that were approaching the end of their life with three new amenities blocks.

The upgraded amenities have improved the visitor experience and increased the appeal of the Crown reserve for overnight camping and day-use activities.

Other improvements have included upgrades to electrical, water supply, hydraulic, and fire system infrastructure and new power supply points with inbuilt water taps at camping sites.

Further works recently completed at the reserve include two new barbecue shelters on concrete slabs with tables and chairs, and a new park entry sign and display map.

The 80-hectare camping site, located at Silverton 37km north-west of Broken Hill, is an outback oasis treasured by locals and visitors who enjoy camping in the great outdoors.

The recreation and campground is a drawcard for people whether they are looking for a quiet camping spot, a family barbecue or an eventful weekend.

On average, Penrose Park accepts 3,500 bookings a year for its powered and unpowered camp sites, bunk houses, ensuite cabins and cottage. Hundreds of campers also converge on the park for accommodation for annual events like the Mundi Mundi Bash.

A short walk across the creek from Penrose Park gives families the chance to enjoy camel rides, a pub, bakery, museum, art galleries and much more in Silverton.

Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said Penrose Park is a local gem and an iconic Crown land reserve close to the heart of the community for more than a century.

“Penrose Park is the perfect destination for a true outback experience in Far West NSW,” Mr Kamper said.

“Visitors and locals can now enjoy the campground in more comfort and better safety. This major investment will benefit locals and help the tourism industry cater for more visitors to the Broken Hill region, supporting jobs.”

Penrose Park caretaker Terina Kingi said the upgrades will help service more visitors to the park.

“These upgrades were needed and we are grateful to have updated facilities that will help boost our numbers of bookings,” Ms Kingi said.
