$4 million awarded by the NSW Government for Walka Water Works chimney restoration

Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison MP has announced critical repairs will be carried out on the historic Walka Water Works chimney after the Minns Labor Government committed $4 million in funding for urgent maintenance.

The 36-metre chimney is a defining feature of the iconic 64 hectare Crown Reserve which is listed on the NSW State Heritage register due to its important connection to the state’s water supply and electricity generation history.

The NSW Government funding will support critical works to repair and strengthen the chimney to ensure its preservation and also protect the adjoining pumphouse.

The NSW Minns Labor Government via Crown Lands is providing the funding to Maitland City Council, which is the appointed Crown Land manager of the reserve. Under the Deed of Management, Council is responsible for the care and maintenance of all above ground assets on the site, including the Chimney.

Recent assessments found the historic chimney was deteriorating, with falling bricks and loose mortar placing it at risk of collapse and prompting Council to install a safety exclusion zone around the structure.

The exclusion zone had also stalled works previously funded by the NSW State Government for asbestos remediation on the lawns due to safety.

Since 2022, Crown Lands has provided Council with $5.66 million in grants to support site remediation including asbestos remediation so the reserve can continue to be open to the public.

Minister for Lands and Property, Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said:

“This Crown reserve has long been a well-loved public recreation area, and the heritage-listed structures that define the site hold so much significance for not only the local community but also those who visit from outside the area.

“Walka Water Works is an important contributor to Maitland’s tourist economy and this investment by the NSW Government will allow locals and visitors to continue enjoying the reserve as a vibrant community and tourism destination.”
