Port Stephens Regional Crown Reserve

The reserve aims to help protect sensitive coastal lands while allowing for efficient planning and management of the area and the enhancement of tourism opportunities to boost the local economy.

The reserve fulfils on the Government’s commitment outlined in the State Plan for better outcomes for native vegetation, biodiversity, land, rivers and coastal waterways and will also fulfil a commitment to attract more people to our parks and recreational facilities.

The reserve has been declared and draft Plans of Management are being developed for the Nelson Bay foreshore and the Regional Crown Reserve as a whole.

Some benefits of the project:

  • A balance is now struck between public enjoyment of the reserve and the need to conserve environmentally sensitive areas
  • It allows for management of bushfires, weeds, erosion, drainage and pests to ensure they do not threaten delicate ecosystems
  • It ensure complete protection of threatened species, heritage structures, aboriginal culture, wetlands and beaches
  • It proposes the building of walkways and access points to minimise movements on conservation areas
  • It offers enhancement of public facilities to encourage tourism to the area which will boost the local economy
  • It provides greater public awareness of the area and efficient distribution of funding to where it is most needed
